A TEA member writes and asks…
I’m a professional cake decorator and I’d love to teach other people some basic skills, but why do I need to learn how to teach, surely it’s just common sense?
Common sense comes into it a lot you’re right, but teaching involves a completely different skills set to cake decorating and, to put it bluntly, just because you are good at one doesn’t mean you’d be good at the other.
How are you going to structure your session so that it’s informative and fun?
What will you do if you get complete beginners, those who’ve done a bit, and Mary Berry’s twin sister, all in the same group?
How can you assess that people have actually learnt what you’ve taught?
Take the time to upskill and you’ll be a much better teacher. Get it right from the outset.
